Keeping it running

Languages

On this page

MyMeetBook ships in English and Bengali. You can add any language and translate it in the browser.

Where languages live

Each language is one file, languages/<code>.json, for example languages/bn.json. English is the source language and needs no file.

Adding a language

Admin → Languages → Add a language. Give it a code of 2 to 5 letters (fr, pt, ar), its name written in that language, and optionally a flag. Tick Written right to left for Arabic, Urdu, Hebrew and Persian; the pages then run from right to left.

A new language starts empty. The site shows English for every phrase you have not translated yet.

Translating

Press Translate beside a language.

  • Search English or translation finds a phrase.
  • Untranslated only lists what is still missing.
  • Type the translations and press Save this page.

Keep the parts in curly brackets exactly as they are: in {n} friends the {n} becomes the number.

What you type here is kept in the database and wins over the language file. An update that brings a newer bn.json therefore never undoes your own wording. Remove my database translations goes back to the wording of the file.

Export and import

  • Export merged JSON downloads one file with the file's translations and yours together.
  • Import JSON reads a file of the same shape: {"strings": {"English phrase": "Translation"}}.

Send the exported file to a translator, import what comes back.

Which language a visitor sees

  1. A member's own choice: the language menu under the avatar, or Settings → General → Language.
  2. Otherwise the language the visitor picked earlier, remembered in a cookie.
  3. Otherwise the language of the browser, when Admin → Settings → General → Pick the language from the browser is on.
  4. Otherwise the default language.

Make default on the Languages page sets the default. A language that is switched Off is hidden from visitors but keeps its translations.

Phrases of plugins and themes

Plugins and themes use the same language files. Their phrases appear in the translation list as soon as the plugin is on.

Dates and numbers

Times follow the time zone set on Admin → Settings → General. A member can choose another one on Settings → General → Time zone.
