Languages
On this page
The panels speak English and Bengali out of the box. Each person picks a language from the switch in the top bar, and you can add another language or change any Bengali wording from the admin panel, without touching a file.
Switching it on
Languages is free and is switched on when the script is installed. If it was switched off, open Admin → Addons (in the System group of the sidebar), find Language Addons and press Enable. With the addon off the panels are in English and show no switch.
The switch in the top bar
The admin panel and the dealer portal both show the switch: one button per language with the language's own name (English, বাংলা), or its short code (EN, BN) on a narrow screen. A click changes the language and brings you back to the same page. The choice is remembered on that browser for a year, also after signing out.
People who have never chosen start in the Default language (see below).
The Bengali that ships covers the menus, the common buttons, the states things are in, and the repair and earmould screens, which are the parts a dealer reads all day. A word that has no translation yet shows in English, so a half-finished language is still perfectly usable.
The Languages screen
Admin → Languages (in the Addons group of the sidebar; the role needs Change system settings).
At the top there is a button for every language other than English, and n of m done. The card below shows the language with its percentage, a progress bar and the list of words:
- Find a word… searches the English text and the key.
- Still to do shows only what has no translation yet, Already done what has, Everything both. Press Show.
- Each row has the English text, with its key in small type underneath, and a box for the translation. Fill in as many as you like and press Save these.
The still-to-do list
This list fills itself. Every time somebody opens a page in a language other than English, any label on that page without a translation is written down here. So finishing a translation means working through Still to do now and then, instead of hunting through the panel for what was missed. The more the panel is used in that language, the more complete the list becomes.
Changing a word that ships with the script
Choose Already done, find the word, type your own wording over it and press Save these. Your version is kept in the database and wins over the file that ships with the script. Clear the box and save to go back to the original. English wording is not edited on this screen.
Because your words live in the database, an update of the script, which replaces languages/en.php and languages/bn.php, does not undo them. Correct wording here rather than in those files.
Default language
In the What visitors start in card, pick the Default language and press Save. Anyone can change it for themselves with the switch in the top bar; this is only where they start. There is one default for everybody, so choose the language most of your staff and dealers want and let the rest use the switch.
Adding a language
The Add a language card:
| Field | Example |
|---|---|
| Code | hi (two letters, as in en or bn) |
| Reads | Left to right, or Right to left |
| Name in English | Hindi |
| Name in itself | हिन्दी (this is what the switch shows) |
Press Add it. The new language is in the switch at once, with nothing translated yet: everything shows in English until you work through its Still to do list. Reads is saved with the language, but this version still lays every page out left to right.
The addon's settings
Admin → Addons → Language Addons → Settings has two boxes:
- Language a new visitor sees is copied across only the first time the addon is switched on. After that, the Default language on the Languages screen is the one that counts.
- Dealers may change their own language: in this version the switch shows in the dealer portal either way.
Tips
- If an English text contains a placeholder such as
:nameor:count, keep it exactly as it is in your translation; the panel fills it in. - Open the pages your dealers use most in Bengali once, then look at Still to do. That is the shortest list of what matters.
